At a public hearing on August 8th the Sudbury Zoning Board of Appeals approved a comprehensive permit for B’nai B’rith Housing New England’s “The Coolidge at Sudbury” affordable senior rental housing proposal. On August 30th, the permit was certified.
The Coolidge atSudbury, located at189 Boston Post Road, will provide 64 units of affordable senior rental housing. The name for the development, the Coolidge at Sudbury, pays homage to the Coolidge family, who began the substantial greenhouse operation on the site in the late 1800s. The Coolidge will be a high quality rental community promoting active living that allows metrowest seniors to maintain their independence while remaining in their communities.
During the local hearing process residents were encouraged to provide public testimony. Included with the B’nai B’rith proposal were a letter of support signed by nearly 30 local residents and an interfaith letter of support signed by multiple clergy leaders of local churches and synagogues.
“We’re very excited about reaching this milestone in our work to build affordable senior housing inSudbury,” said B’nai B’rith Housing Executive Director Susan Gittelman. “The town of Sudbury has been a pleasure to work with and the Zoning Board’s suggestions have enhanced our proposal. We appreciate their interest in building high quality affordable housing for Sudbury residents.”
“Sudbury needs to make it easier for our seniors to stay in the community,” said Sudbury resident Kathleen Bean. “At the hearings, I expressed my support for B’nai B’rith Housing’s proposal because it addresses Sudbury’s critical need for affordable senior housing.”
A number of Sudbury residents spoke at the hearings to provide support for the proposal and the goals of B’nai B’rith Housing to bring additional affordable housing to expensive housing areas like Sudbury.
“As a long time resident of Sudbury who has struggled to stay here because of an oil spill that made my home uninhabitable, this proposal will provide residents like myself rental options we didn’t have before,” said Lydia Hughes. “Like many residents, I didn’t want to leave Sudbury. I’m excited that B’nai B’rith chose Sudbury to work in.”
