The Boston City Council is scheduled to discuss ways to get residents into available affordable housing units on Tuesday.
Boston's Department of Fair Housing and Equity recently found that there are more than 800 vacant affordable housing units in the city.
City Councilor Anissa Essaibi George says the process to move into those units can take as long as two and a half years, and wants to streamline the process.
"It should be all online, all through one-stop shopping, both for the rental and the ownership opportunities," she said. "And then our residents should be moved quicker through that process so they can be moved in."
