BBH October 2024 E-News: Happy New Year, Milestone for Hyde Park project & Summer Fun Reflections!

Welcome to the latest edition of B’nai B’rith Housing’s newsletter. We are dedicated to advancing our mission of creating affordable housing opportunities throughout Greater Boston. This issue highlights recent milestones, community engagement, and the innovative approaches we’re taking to address the region’s housing challenges.

Celebrating Progress: Launch of 63 New Senior Housing Units

On September 26th, we proudly held the groundbreaking ceremony for our latest development located in Hyde Park’s Logan Square. This project will bring 63 units of high-quality, affordable senior housing to the community, marking a significant step forward in our commitment to addressing housing needs in Boston. The event also featured a steel signing ceremony, where all event participants had the opportunity to add their names to a steel beam that is being erected at the site. It was a great opportunity for everyone to be part of the festivities and to become part of the project’s legacy!

We were honored to be joined by distinguished guests, including Sheila Dillon, Chief of Housing and Director of the Mayor’s Office of Housing (MOH), and Nikko Mendoza, Massachusetts Undersecretary and Chief of Staff, Executive Office of Housing and Livable Communities (EOHLC). Additionally, Boston City Council President Ruthzee Louijeune, State Representative Rob Consalvo, and City Councilor Enrique Pepén along with private partners including Pete Flynn, representing Redstone Equity Partners helped celebrate this milestone with us. It was a great opportunity also to share our story, and we are so grateful to BBH board member Gio Valencia who talked about what this opportunity means to the community and beyond.

A Call for Bold Action: Susan’s Perspective on the Momentum Fund, part of the $5.1 Billion Affordable Homes Act

Susan’s most recent Op-Ed discusses the recently passed $5.1 billion bond bill (aka the Affordable Homes Act) and highlights a key component of this bill which is the innovative $50 million “Momentum Fund,” designed to provide flexible financing for stalled, market-driven mixed-income housing projects. With over 10,000 permitted housing units currently delayed in Boston suburbs and another 10,000 in Boston itself, this fund aims to reignite development and deliver much-needed housing to the region... Community Corner: Summer Time Fun

The summer at our B’nai B’rith Housing communities was filled with exciting activities that kept our residents engaged and connected. From Laughter Yoga to bracelet-making sessions, and a community cookout with delicious hot dogs expertly grilled by Cody and Greg, the summer programs provided invaluable opportunities for residents to come together and strengthen community ties.

July offered a lineup of enjoyable games such as Bingo, Pokeno, Mahjong, and Canasta, ensuring there was something for everyone to participate in. Of course, our activities are open to all of our residents, regardless of which building hosts the event, reinforcing our commitment to inclusivity. As we transition into the fall season, we look forward to the refreshing autumn air, vibrant foliage, and the delightful Halloween festivities that await us.

New Addition to Our Team: Chris James, Real Estate Project Manager

We are pleased to welcome Chris James as a new Real Estate Senior Project Manager at B’nai B’rith Housing. Originally from the Tampa Bay area in Florida, Chris is a licensed architect and brings a diverse background in architecture and real estate development.

Since relocating to Boston, Chris completed a master’s program at the Harvard University Graduate School of Design. We are excited about the impact that we know he will have in strengthening neighborhoods and creating thriving communities.

Insights from the B’nai B’rith International Conference In Philadelphia

Susan recently attended B’nai B’rith International’s annual Senior Housing Conference which was held this year in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The meeting included a variety of topical meetings and trainings and concluded with a tour of the Asher Rubin B’nai B’rith Apartments in Claymont, Delaware. As always it was a great opportunity to share experiences and best practice approaches to affordable housing management and development.
