Meet Alla, a longtime resident of Covenant House who regularly takes advantage of the abundant opportunities for socialization and exercise, and credits her good health to her active lifestyle. “I like being able to interact with my neighbors. It’s good for people to have others to talk with so they don’t feel alone.” Alla fully embraces the diversity at Covenant House; she particularly enjoys having a multilingual library, taking English classes, and meeting with others for Cinema Club. These activities not only provide much needed social outlets for residents, but they are also opportunities to practice language and discuss cultural topics. Alla is also generous in her praise of the site staff for their commitment to the residents, “They organize different trips, to concerts or the zoo, or just regular shopping. It’s great to get out, walk a bit, and have some entertainment. It’s so good for us.” We at BBH agree! Building affordable housing for seniors is not just about putting a roof over their heads. It’s about combating isolation and helping seniors live healthy, happy lives.
